To Kiss or
Not To Kiss
Souvenirs capture the essence of a location. This project updates iconic Dutch souvenirs to reflect the current Netherlands, starting with ‘The Dutch Kissing Couple.’ Through conversations and co-creation sessions with a diverse group, the initial concept evolved into a souvenir that blends cultural backgrounds and gender. This intervention fosters dialogue about the relationship between location, ethnicity, identity, culture, and their representation, themes that resonate in modern societies.
This project brings together individuals from different cultural backgrounds, generations, and professions who share a common location: where they live. Co-creation sessions invited participants to think of souvenirs that represent them, connecting people through shared spaces and diverse cultural experiences. These workshops guided participants in sharing the essence of their culture and translating it into a contemporary souvenir. The stories, symbols, and discussions shared become design material that reflects the evolving cultural connections in updated iconic souvenirs.

Design, Culture & Souvenirs
‘To Kiss or Not To Kiss’ unfolds within the context of Delft Blue, a historic symbol of Dutch lifestyle, now reinterpreted. Delft Blue, which originated from Chinese porcelain, has played a significant role in Dutch social history. This project explores how the diverse stories and identities in today’s Netherlands can be told through Delft Blue, reflecting the plurality of traditions, culture and gender backgrounds.
Souvenirs attract consumers by embodying what they recognize as ‘typical’ of a place. Providing these expected elements can initiate discussions on meaningful concepts such as diversity, openness, and solidarity. From a design perspective, it is intriguing to explore what has been traditionally ‘Dutch’ and what is considered ‘typical’ now. Updating familiar souvenirs may be the first step in capturing attention, encouraging people to discover deeper cultural insights.
The Role of Delft Blue
I am interested in exploring the intricacies of the subject of diversity and migration and to materialize them into daily objects that remind people of the beauty in diversity
